Expanded Propylene
The use of Expanded Propylene (EPP) has increased over recent years, helping manufacturers reduce the environmental impact of products and manage energy more efficiently.
In the energy industry for example, EPP has become a key sound proofing and insulating component in heating and ventilation systems. Here - and in packaging solutions – its properties bring savings for fuel consumption.
Many of the benefits of EPP are shared with EPS, so you can expect it to offer long-lasting strength and good thermal insulation, alongside shock absorbance, buoyancy and recyclability. There is one important difference - EPP is less brittle and recovers its shape, where EPS may suffer permanent damage. It means that EPP is ideal when facing multiple impacts – in car bumpers for example.
With so many different application areas, material specifications will vary. We provide different grades based on your technical requirements – and offer customised innovations. For example, high-density grades are ideal when energy management is important, whereas low-density grades are more suitable for packaging. If you are working within regulated levels of volatile organic compounds in automotive interiors, choose our low emission grades.
To improve acoustic insulation and reduce weight, we developed a porous product with increased air space in the final moulded form. It uses cylindrical polypropylene beads rather than spherical ones. Developments such as these are pushing EPP into new areas of application.
What is EPP?
EPP products are made from expanded propylene beads fused together in a process which requires just heat and water. No compounds considered harmful to the environment - such as volatile organic compounds or chlorofluorocarbons - are involved in the process.
Where is EPP used?
EPP offers great protection for products during transit and is used for transport containers and packaging solutions. It absorbs and dissipates shocks and can be moulded to the precise shape of your components to ensure they arrive in exactly the same condition as when they left the factory.
EPP delivery containers and coolers offer the thermal insulation needed to keep both hot and cold food and drink products at the required temperature. It is approved for direct food contact and resists microbial growth. It can also be made sterile with steam cleaning.
EPP has wide-ranging applications in the automotive industry, making use of its insulation, shock absorbing and lightweight properties. These include energy-absorbing components in bumpers and other parts like seating, sun visors, door panels or head rests. We believe there are big opportunities for other industrial applications too – moulded parts of heating and ventilation systems, insulation for technical elements, and more.
EPP can be combined with inserts like clasps, place holders, or additional protection covers, and with accessories like belts, temperature sensors or digital devices. Get in touch and let’s create new material solutions for your products and applications together.
Can I use EPP for design solutions?
EPP is available in black or white as well as in a range of vibrant colours. This variety makes EPP ideal for eye-catching design elements like furniture or artwork. You can choose from a range of surface textures too which means there is no need for additional covers, paint or coatings.
Can EPP be recycled?
EPP can be fully and easily recycled. However, the infrastructure to collect EPP for recycling needs to be further developed. It is possible to include recycled materials in your product, depending on your performance requirements. Talk to us to explore the possibilities.
